Alfonso Ascencio-Herrera

Alfonso Ascencio Herrera has been serving as the Legal Counsel 

and Deputy to the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority since early 2017. His extensive career as a diplomat and legal expert has been pivotal in shaping the Authority’s legal framework and its role in the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Ascencio-Herrera’s previous positions include serving as the Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Mexico to the Republic of Korea and as the Director of the International Law Unit at the Legal Adviser’s Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico. His work has been instrumental in ensuring the effective participation of developing states in activities in the Area and promoting capacity-building and technology transfer.
