Laurence Boisson de Chazournes
Professor Laurence Boisson de Chazournes, an academic and a practitioner, is Senior Distinguished Fellow and a Visiting Professor at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies and President of the Council of the Center for International Dispute Settlement (CIDS). She was the Director of the L.L.M. in International Dispute Settlement (MIDS) until 2024.
A Member of Matrix Chambers (Matrix Chambers) she regularly acts as counsel and advocate before the International Court of Justice and the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea. She also acts as an arbitrator for the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC), and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). She is a judge at the Administrative Tribunal of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and has served as chairperson of WTO arbitration panels on pre-shipment inspections. She is also a member of the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators.
Professor Boisson de Chazournes has also served as consultant to many international organizations, including the ILO, the UN Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for a Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the UN Center for Human Rights. From 1995 to 1999 she served as Senior Counsel at the World Bank, Legal Department, Environment and International Law Unit. She was a member of the Advisory Committee of the UN Human Rights Council and has been a member of the High Level Panel on Water and Peace.
She is a Professor em. at the University of Geneva, a member of the Institut de droit international, and a member of the Curatorium of the Hague Academy of International Law. In 2022–23, she held the Annual Shared Sustainable Future Chair at the Collège de France. She has been and is a visiting professor at law schools including the National University of Singapore, Universities of Paris I, Paris II, and Aix-Marseille in France, the University of Tokyo, and the University of Buenos Aires. She recently taught the General Course on Public International Law at The Hague Academy of International Law. She has served as President of the European Society of International Law and as a member of the ASIL Executive Council.
She was awarded the Elizabeth Haub Prize for Environmental Law in 2008 and a Doctorate honoris causa of Aix-Marseille University in 2014. In 2024, she was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur by the French Republic. In 2026, she received the prestigious Manley Hudson Medal from the American Society of International Law.
Laurence Boisson de Chazournes has authored ten books and edited twenty-five books, and she has written over 280 articles and contributions to edited volumes. She has been and is a member of many editorial and advisory boards, including those of the American Journal of International Law, the European Journal of International Law, the International Organizations Law Review and the Law and Practice of International Courts and Tribunals.
