Maria Ressa is an award-winning Filipino-American journalist, author, and CEO of the independent investigative news site Rappler. She was awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for her fearless fight to safeguard freedom of expression and for exposing government corruption, human rights abuses, and online disinformation in the Philippines.

A trailblazer in investigative reporting, Ressa spent two decades as a lead Southeast Asia correspondent for CNN before co-founding Rappler in 2012. Her relentless reporting on President Rodrigo Duterte’s brutal “war on drugs” and the weaponization of social media made her a prominent target for state-sponsored harassment, legal battles, and multiple arrests.
