Professor Heike Krieger
Heike Krieger is a professor of public law and international law at the Freie Universität Berlin She is President of the German Society of International Law and a member of the Senate of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Heike Krieger was chair of the DFG-funded Berlin Potsdam Research Group ‘The International Rule of Law – Rise or Decline?’ (2020-2024). She was a Visiting Professor at the Centre for Transnational Legal Studies, London, and the Universities of Macerata and Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Heike Krieger was a judge at the Constitutional Court of the State of Berlin from 2007 to 2014, a member of the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) from 2014 to 2020 and a Max Planck Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Heidelberg, from 2017 to 2021. Her research focuses on general international law, international humanitarian law and human rights protection.
Heike Krieger is editor-in-chief of the Yearbook of International Humanitarian Law (T.M.C. Asser Press and Springer). Her publications include ‘From Protracted Conflict to Sustainable Peace’ (OUP, 2026; ed. with G. Jokubauskaite, A. Ozcelik Olcay and A. Buser); the ‘Research Handbook on International Law and Domestic Legal Systems’ (Edward Elgar, 2024; ed. with H. Aust and F.
