Sonya Sceats

Sonya Sceats became BIICL’s Director and Chief Executive in 2026. Sonya is an Australian qualified solicitor specialising in international human rights law. She has over 20 years’ experience working on human rights issues at civil society organisations in the UK, including Freedom from Torture where she served as Chief Executive from 2018-2026.

Sonya was an Associate Fellow in International Law at Chatham House from 2005 to 2021.

Sonya holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours from the Australian National University and was awarded the University Medal for her thesis on judicial review of immigration decisions in Australia. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago where she authored a thesis on the concept of the international rule of law.
