The British Red Cross

The British Red Cross is the recognised National Red Cross Society for the UK and a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Like other National Societies, it is an auxiliary to the public authorities in the humanitarian field.

The British Red Cross has a recognised role working with the UK public authorities in the dissemination and implementation of international humanitarian law (IHL) and in protecting the integrity of the red cross, red crescent and red crystal emblems. This is one of the unique aspects of the organisation. The British Red Cross is a member of the UK National Committee on IHL, and works with UK government departments, HM Forces and other institutions on a range of IHL matters, providing advice, training and assistance.

The British Red Cross has a partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in maintaining their online Customary IHL database, undertaken by a research team based at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law in Cambridge.

Operationally, the British Red Cross delivers humanitarian services in the UK, and overseas in partnership with other Red Cross and Red Crescent organisations. We support the organisational development of sister National Societies through the provision of bilateral advice, and through support to informal regional networks of National Society legal advisers, and participation in Movement initiatives and projects.
